Getting Started with Lucy Glo Apples
So last week I bought these shiny Lucy Glo apples after seeing them at the farmer's market. Had no clue how to use 'em right so I just bit into one raw first. Mistake! Way too sour and weirdly crunchy. Figured there must be better ways.
My Washing Experiment
First thing I did was rinse three apples under cold water like any regular fruit. Noticed they had this weird waxy feel though, so I grabbed my vegetable brush and scrubbed hard. Saw some cloudy stuff coming off in the sink - freaked me out a bit honestly. Kept scrubbing till they squeaked.
Trying Different Cuts
Chopped one apple thin with my cheap knife, took ages cause these suckers are hard as rocks. Sliced another thicker for snacking. Left the third whole for baking later. Pro tip: use your sharpest knife unless you wanna lose fingers!

My Taste Tests
Tried the thin slices raw with peanut butter - still too sour for me. Then sprinkled cinnamon on the thick slices and bam! Magic happened. That spicy-sweet combo balanced the tartness perfect. Felt proud discovering that hack!
Simple Baking Win
Stuck that whole apple in my toaster oven at 375°F for like 25 mins. Added brown sugar and walnuts before baking. When it came out bubbling? Best thing ever - soft inside but held its shape. Made six more that week cause I got addicted.
What Actually Works
- Scrub hard under cold water till you hear squeaking
- Slice THICK - thin cuts turn too sour
- Always pair with cinnamon or nutmeg
- Baking > raw (trust me on this)
- Wrap leftover slices in wet paper towels so they don't brown fast
Now they're my go-to baking apple. Still won't eat 'em raw though - that sour punch almost knocked my teeth out first try!
