Ceramic flat irons smooth hair by applying controlled heat and pressure. Follow these steps for optimal results.
Preparations
- Wash & Dry: Start with clean, completely dry hair. Never iron wet or damp hair.
- Detangle: Use a wide-tooth comb or paddle brush to remove all knots.
- Protect: Apply a heat protectant spray or serum evenly throughout hair, focusing on mid-lengths and ends.
- Section Hair: Clip up the top layers, leaving only the bottom 1-2 inch layer down.
Ironing Technique
- Temperature: Select the lowest effective heat setting (fine/damaged hair: 300-330°F, normal: 330-375°F, thick/coarse: 375-400°F).
- Small Sections: Take small sections (0.5-1 inch wide, max). Thinner sections = smoother results.
- Clamp & Glide: Place the iron near the root (avoid touching the scalp). Firmly clamp the section. Slowly and smoothly glide the iron down the hair shaft to the ends (in one motion).
- Pass Once: Ideally, pass each section only once with the flat iron.
- Move Up: Continue working through all bottom sections, then unclip the next layer and repeat.
Finishing Touches
- Cool: Allow each smoothed section to cool slightly before letting it blend with others.
- End Treatment: Add a drop of lightweight serum or oil to ends to combat dryness (optional).
- Unplug: Immediately turn off and unplug the iron after use. Place it on a heat-safe surface.
